Talked About Being Transgender With My Son

I talked about GLBT with my son. He asked a number of questions to which I was able to answer. He asked if being gay is a sin? I answered no. I shared with him that I knew that I was different all my life. I love these moments because it presents an opportunity to share that we are people, too.

We touched on topics like gays in the military, trangenderism, my wearing women’s clothing, Christianity, GLBT people in the church, and numerous other topics. I’m happy that he’s accepting and open about my transgenderism. He’s always been perceptive about life. I hope that there will be more opportunities like this.

A Time To Reflect

The holiday season is a time of reflection for me. It is a time to think about the year gone by. It is also a time of loneliness, regret and lament for many people. The memories of happier days can be a source of bitterness, shame and regret. I look at this time to assess where I am. I am thankful for the opportunity to be here because many are not.

Hospitiality was one of the virtues my late mother possessed. If she knew someone who was alone, she would invite them over for dinner and company. Later they would comment that it was the best time they had in a while. People can use a kind word, a smile, or a helping hand during this pressurized consumer driven time we call holiday shopping.

Kindness can go a long way at this time. Invite someone over, call them on the phone, or send a Christmas card. The past can’t be changed but we must go forward. Don’t be afraid to take the first step in making life better for you or someone else.

Writing and Gender

Each day presents me with new challenges and discoveries. I have learned to embrace those things that I may not have experienced. It applies to writing as much as it does to gender.

One of the areas I’ve struggled with is to make my characters vulnerable to their own feelings and shortcomings. It can be a failed marriage. It can be dreams unfulfilled or disappointing friends and family. I see that when a person chooses to live in a new identity. They are vulnerable to ridicule , misunderstanding, or rejection. Being authentic is what makes life worth living. Others can see if you are comfortable in your own skin.

Being bigendered has convinced me to seek knowledge about preconceived notions about gender and how it is perceived. I have read the bible with a new revelation. I have dug into the history of transgnder and gender variant people of the past. I see now where writing and gender have something in common. Being authentic in both is important to me.

Busy

My computer was down for over a week. It’s back up now (thank goodness). I have been busy with personal matters so I haven’t been posting as much. When I finish all of that I’ll be spending more time on the things I enjoy.

Reconnecting

I have visited some places that influenced me during my youth. A Catholic church reminds me of my upbringing. A once proud avart-garde neighborhood reminds me of the time of exploration and freedom. I don’t pine for the days gone by but sometimes it’s good to reflect on them. Before we continue on our journey sometimes we need to reflect on where we have been.
